Learning Finnish (ask)

Post  Jenni on Sun May 09, 2010 2:42 pm

So with Tiia we have been talking that maybe we should have this topic where people can ask about anything they would like to know and they have as part they do no understand or something, and the other topic for discussions and practicing what you already know Smile

So feel free to ask and maybe someone already knows it and can explain it to you Smile

Can anyone please show me how to pronouce these words: öy, yö, ou, uo, y, uu?
And the word "kirkkain" is pronouced like "ki-r-kkain" or "ki-r-kka-in"?

I'm trying to learn Finnish by myself so sometime I can't imagine the way a word can be pronounced.

I also learn finnish by myself, so ... maybe this video can help you a bit, it helped me, but actually i've never had any problems with finnish pronunciation.
Listen to finnish-speaking bands Wink It's my universal recipe.

Voi EI SupiSoumea en hyvää.

For Germans there is a good book with a CD and all this which is called "Yksi kaksi kolme" and it really helps. It starts from nothing.

About the pronouncation it´s easy:
Everything is spoken like written.
Something double speak it long.
Also in general the y is spoken like ü (for the germans)

I am so done with learning today for Finnish.

I have to get into my head gradation which means nothing else:
when you have a word like
kakku -> kakut (the cake - the cakes) changing it from singular to pular

the local caes which are really fucked up in Finnish because there are 6 of them and you have to think about if you go into a closed space or out, if the thing is happening inside or outside and of course, as always when it comes to Finnish, there are exceptions from the rules.
E.G.
Someone is asking you "Where are u?" = Missä sinä olet?
And you wanna say "I am at Sokos" (famous shop here in Finland)
according to the rules, because you are INSIDE the shop you would say "Sokoksessa" because the ending ssa shows you are inside something, like a house or something.
Well in this case it´s wrong.
It has to be Sokoksella, which is just one of the many exceptions of the rules.

Not to forget my friend the Partitiivi = Partitiv which means, when u have a thing which is not well defined like when you ask "Buy some milk please" you would say maito, well in Finnish you have to add an a so it becomes maitoa because it´s not "that milk over there".

Also the Genitiv and the Plural are in my list...

I am sooo doomed...
